After moving, in 1989, from mainly outdoor work in Southland to 'driving' a desk in Wellington, I looked around for something to keep me fit. Realising that gyms are boring and un-motivating I spotted a small ad in the local supermarket for Master Simons Kung Fu classes in Kelburn. I went along and have been traning with Chans ever since.
I started teaching Kung Fu in 1996, after attaining 1st degree, when the then Lower Hut instructor (Mr Chris Routhan) retired. In 2001 I was promoted to 2nd degree, and in 2008 3rd degree.
Also, in 2000 I was encouraged by Master Chan to study Taichi and in 2005 started teaching it as a separate class.
I think that to advance to a very high level you have to pass on the knowledge that you have learned so that your 'cup' is always being emptied, also teaching has many rewards of its own. That is why I'm passionate about teaching and developing myself and other to the best of our abilities.
